What is the least incriminating or detrimental thing one can say on one%26#039;s own behalf if these goons confront one on the phone? Say for example that one of the reasons is that one%26#039;s rent is 70% of one%26#039;s net income.
What should one say to a credit card company one is in debt to if one is unable to pay them at present?
Some credit companies will set up a payment plan with you if you explain your situation to them. You may also want to visit your bank and speak to an advisor. They may be able to refinance your debt for a much lower rate, if you give up the credit card.
With regards to your rent... could you take in a roommate to lower your share of the rent? Could you move to somewhere with lower rent?

Talk to the credit company in as civil a manner as you would want to be spoken to. Tell them that you cannot afford the monthly minimum payment at this time but can pay x amount each month until things get better. They WILL work with you. You have to work WITH them though and don%26#039;t ignore your responsibilities.

well before they start calling why not tell them the situation and give them their card back and ask them if the will lower the interest rate so you can pay it down faster
the have done this in the past give people a 0% interest rate so they get their money

Tell them that you want to pay them and you hope that you can work out agreeable terms, either with a reduced monthly payment in exchange for stopping usage on the card or if they could lower the interest rate in exchange for stopping usage of the card.
An alternative is to contact a Consumer Credit Counselling Service, which you would then give a predetermined sum to and they would pay your monthly bills. They negotiate lower terms with all of your creditors and pay your bills for you out of what you give them each month. It takes many years to pay off cards this way, and looks bad on your credit, but if that%26#039;s your only option then it%26#039;s available to you.
What should one say to a credit card company one is in debt to if one is unable to pay them at present?
Up to how much in debt. If a little bit and temporary ask them if you can reduce the payment for a while.
If a larger amount but you can cope get a consolidation loan at lower interest from a bank and pay off the card but then don%26#039;t get tempted to use the new credit available in the card.
If it is really hopeless go to debt counciling and they will negotiate either a less than balance owed settlement or a token monthly payment if the debt is not to be cancelled.
Don%26#039;t blame the %26#039;goons%26#039;. They didn%26#039;t over extend themselves, you did, so go about it the right way and everyone will be satisfied (even if not happy) and you will avoid paying some of what you should and avoid going to court.
What should one say to a credit card company one is in debt to if one is unable to pay them at present?
You tell them the truth...then you go look for some cracker box hole in the wall apt. to rent so you can get out of your high rent situation and start paying them again. You also look for some extra part time work for some extra bucks so you can start paying something. Something is always better than nothing. A token payment may not get you very far toward paying down the loan but it lets them know you have not forgotten the debt and you are serious about doing something to make amends.
remember the key is to cut your costs, and increase your income. Without BOTH of these methods your going to have a lot of trouble. Why on earth would you pick an appartment you can%26#039;t afford with the debt you carry? Thats not the actions of an adult. Fix this. Its your job not theirs so you take responsibility and do it. You will feel better if you do and you will come away much stronger. Cheaper rent and more income will help you build your self up for home ownership instead of broke, in debt and behind on your bills. You pick your course of action, then do it, then live with it. If you chose well living with it will be fun (later), if you chose bad, you will pay and pay for years to come, (your later will suck). Ball is in your court. Do something with it.

Basically call up the credit card company and tell them that you do want to pay them, but you just can%26#039;t really afford the minimum. Tell them what you can afford, and they should work out a deal with you. You also need to make sure you stop using that card. I have all of my cards out of wallet to avoid the temptation to use them. Then don%26#039;t get into this situation again. Only put on a card what you can afford to pay back each month, otherwise you can%26#039;t afford it. I have a friend that is completely debt free and he is only 27. I also have lots of acquaintances that are millionaires. I know of a rapid debt reduction technique that can get you out of debt faster if you are interested let me know.

I think you%26#039;re a bit of a goon for taking on debt you can%26#039;t repay.
If there is a genuine reason for it - other than you prefer to spend money how you please instead of paying your bills - then tell them the truth.
And before you get all snotty and defensive I only say this because I was in debt to a credit card company for just that reason. When I finally decided to sort it out I found they were pretty reasonable and prepared to negotiate about regular payments (and I say regular because if you don%26#039;t keep to what you say they will do what they need to to get their money back - plus interest, plus court costs, plus horrible stress and future crap credit rating for you).
Maybe they are wrong to hand money out so easily, but then if you%26#039;d lent somebody cash and agreed how and when you would get it back - then they didn%26#039;t do that - you%26#039;d feel cheated and they%26#039;d be cheating - reneging on the deal.
If you%26#039;re in the UK you should definitely talk to the Citizens Advice Bureau. They are brilliant for helping people sort out debts - although they won%26#039;t pay them for you!
This is definitely a crap answer coz I%26#039;m doing that moral high ground thing. I don%26#039;t mean it like that. Being in debt is shite. I hope it works out.
