When applying for credit cards in the past, my recollection is there wasn%26#039;t a choice about the credit line I received. Once I applied for the card %26amp; received a credit line, I had the card. So the real question may be...is there a way to shop around for credit lines without killing my credit score?
Example: I have a balance on a card that I would like to transfer to 0%. The first reason would be to get the 0% for a year or whatever the offer is. The second reason would be to spread out some of the balance so that I don%26#039;t have a balance close to my credit limit on a card. I could be wrong but it seems to me that being able to spread out the debt over two cards...carry a 40% ratio of debt/credit limit on two seperate cards...would be better than having an 80% ratio of debt/credit limit on one card. When searching for a card, with all the options %26amp; different sources, If I apply to one and the credit line is not what I expected, can I say %26#039;no%26#039; and shop around for a better deal?
Is it possible to apply for a credit card but not accept it if the amount is not what you were expecting?
No.
When you apply for the card, your credit report is pulled and you get a hard inquiry, which lowers your credit score. It doesn%26#039;t even matter if you%26#039;re approved or not. If you are approved, the account will show up on your report as a new account, which also lowers your credit score. If you don%26#039;t like it, you could close it, but that probably won%26#039;t improve your score. What you should do instead is call the bank, tell them you%26#039;re not happy with the credit line you received, see if you can speak with a credit manager or specialist, and ask them if they can increase the credit line. Your credit line depends on your current credit situation and on your income, so if you have bad credit or low income, this will be difficult to accomplish.
If you are financially responsible, another thing you can do is apply for two or three cards (from different banks) at the same time. I%26#039;d recommend national banks (like Chase, Citi, BofA, AmEx), but I read that some have better luck with credit unions.
You are correct, it is better to have 40% debt/CL ratio over two cards than 80% on one card.
Good luck.

short answer no.
long answer, you probably can.
Is it possible to apply for a credit card but not accept it if the amount is not what you were expecting?
No. Only if they seek you out saying you are pre-approved for this amount. Some banks will do this if you have a really good relationship with them, they%26#039;ll tell you during a transaction that you have been pre-approved.

I would just start calling banks and ask them. Only they can answer for sure what your credit limit can be and/or if you can apply w/out actually accepting.
