Is it better to negotiate past due debt with a credit card company yourself or hire a debt settlement company?
Do it yourself. There is tons of information on the web about how to negotiate yourself. If you go through a service you will have to pay a service charge.

If I were you, I%26#039;d do it myself. FYI...Most banks will not deal with debt settlement companies. I know that Bank of America, GE Money Bank, Citi, and HSBC won%26#039;t deal with them. I work for one of these banks, and if we receive notification that you%26#039;ve signed with a debt settlement company, we immediately send the account to our attorney network to pursue legal action, even if the account isn%26#039;t past due. FYI...Many banks will give you better deals if you are further delinquent. So...You ruin your credit, but save money. By the way, if the forgiven debt results in over $600 being forgiven, the banks will usually file a 1099-C with the IRS. This means that the forgiven amount is considered income and Uncle Sam will come after a portion for taxes. Good luck.
