I have a debt with TD (credit card) owing about 1472. I got a call from Collect Corp on Thursday won

I could pay 1050 by Friday....I told him unfortunately if I had of known that I had the pay that amount 2 weeks ago then I would have been able to do it but not in one day! Then he proceeded to tell me that TD may take legal action against me...so I asked him if the balance was cleared up by the court date will it still go ahead and he said yes. I don%26#039;t understand if the balance was paid in full why I would still have to attend the hearing. I also told him I would be able to pay the 1050 on tues (this coming Tues) and he said it was the end of the month (Friday) and he didn%26#039;t know if it would be acceptable and did not return my calls on Friday to see if the arrangement was okay....Has anyone else had issues like this (in Canada)? Responses from everywhere are welcome :) Thanks!!!

This is common practice for a sleezy collection agent. They make threats and harrass people regularly.

I am an American...here%26#039;s how it works here. (Research your collection laws to see how it works there.)

The firs thing you should do is send a cease %26amp; desist/validation letter. Refuse to talk to them on the phone. By law, they can no longer call you if you make that request.

Negotiate with them in writing, never on the phone. If they really do take legal action, then you will make arrangements with the court to pay it...no big deal...but, try to negotiate with them so there is no judgment on your credit report.

Collection agencies are notorious for trapping and threatening you. Have you been making payments already on a regular basis? If so, and they have accepted your payments, continue as you have been doing in good faith. The government has a hotline you can call and report these type of calls. You can also tell the person that you are recording this call, ask for their name badge number, direct phone number, location from where they are calling, get all the details. Keep telling them you are recording their calls, and that you will contact the gov agency to report their harrassing calls to you. Change your number, keep making your payments though.

After it is paid off, companies sell off the debt to another company and try to collect again - scams. Don%26#039;t be taken in by their threats, just apply simple logic - you are making payments, recording their call, getting all their information, etc..., and let them know you will report them as harrasment.
